Salaries: what employers advertise

Only 94 of the 427 ads (22%) state a monthly salary in yuan, all for jobs in mainland China. Ads in Hong Kong and Taiwan in our feed did not state a salary. Figures are the middle of the advertised range, usually before tax.

Group Ads Middle half of ads Median
All ads with a monthly salary 94 ¥17,500–¥27,400 ¥23,000
Teaching and education 73 ¥18,000–¥27,500 ¥23,500

Guangzhou 12 ¥16,200–¥26,000 ¥22,500
Shanghai 11 ¥20,100–¥28,000 ¥22,500

9 more ads pay by the hour, from about ¥100 to ¥1,000 an hour, mostly for teaching. Part-time work still needs a work permit tied to an employer.

Method

  • Source: the 427 jobs published on SilkPath on 17 October 2026 at 20:05 UTC. SilkPath collects English-language roles open to foreigners in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan from public job listings (mainly LinkedIn, eChinaCities and Jooble) and removes each ad after 30 days, so the snapshot covers ads posted in the previous 30 days.
  • Cities: districts are grouped with their city (for example New Taipei is separate from Taipei, and every Hong Kong district counts as Hong Kong). Some mainland ads only say “China”: they are counted as “city not specified”.
  • Type of role: an ad counts as teaching and education when it is labelled as teaching or when its title contains a teaching word (teacher, ESL, tutor, lecturer, professor, kindergarten, school, faculty and similar). Internships and volunteering come from the ad label or the word “intern”. Everything else is “corporate and other roles”. A keyword rule can misclassify a few titles.
  • Salaries: only monthly amounts in yuan stated by the employer. For a range we take the middle; ads with only a maximum (“up to”), hourly rates, yearly packages and other currencies are left out of the medians. Amounts are rounded to the nearest ¥100. These are advertised figures, not what people are paid.
  • Limits: this is one month of one job board, not the whole market. It shows who is actively advertising in English for foreign candidates.
